"Everything that I am and surrounds me comes through my art, but my work mainly involves a convergence of my two backgrounds, painting and medicine.
I am inspired by my daily clinical practice, where the back-and-forth question-and-answer process mirrors what I do in my painting practice.
By combining my medical and anatomical knowledge with my visual mark-making on the canvas; patterns in the monitor lead into sketches that later become paintings. Once the initial shape and composition are laid down, each subsequent layer is a response to the layer before it, and often, the initial imagery becomes obscured entirely. These semi-transparent layers which are a combination of medical imaging, environment, and self; create a visible history of mark-making, aided by the application of brisk brushstrokes and by using multiple materials such as acrylics, oils, charcoal, spray paint, and gesso.
My creative process refers to the sensitivity many people feel when discussing and confronting the mundane. Through my paintings, I try to capture the range of emotions I sense, from fear to joy and everything in between. My work attempts to present daily challenges in a playful way that invites the viewer into a compassionate conversation."
